The four counties of Northern Virginia, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William, are busy suburban areas of our nation's capital. It is a very wealthy and liberal area, having more in common with New York City than with the closer environs of southern and western Virginia. Two million people live in the region, and there are homes for sale there that are prime investment opportunities.

The school systems of Northern Virginia have a very good reputation. The public schools such as Fairfax County's are among the largest and best in the country. Colleges and Universities also abound in the area, and names such as George Mason University and Marymount are nationally known for their academic programs, and not just sports teams. Reston Virginia Tech has local campuses for the convenience of residents.

There are a lot of houses for sale in this area of northern Virginia. Although there are over four thousand miles of roads in the region, people can get away from this traffic nightmare by taking the Washington Metro which has eighty six stops on one hundred and six miles of track, in addition to the Virginia Railway Express (VRE). There are also two principal airports in northern Virginia: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) along with Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

Both the fact that northern Virginia is near to the nation's capital and the availability of so many varied visitor attractions have turned the area into one of the country's top travel destinations. During a visit here, one might want to see Mount Vernon (the former home of President George Washington) and Arlington National Cemetery (burial site of many famous people including President John F. Kennedy), as well as the National Zoo, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the White House, all in the District of Columbia. You also might like to browse through any and all of the Smithsonian Institution's 18 separate museums.

On occasion someone will ask me for advice on touring the Civil War battlefields in or near Virginia. Not knowing people's interests and situation it's always tough to give that sort of advice, but I'll give it a shot. Firstly and most importantly, do plenty of research before you go. You can't do enough research. Park service interpretation can range from excellent to non-existent, and you won't know for sure until you get there.
